Which Nationalities and Flight Routes Require a Turkey e-ATV?
Turkey’s published e-ATV guidance identifies travelers from Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, India, Mauritania, Nepal, Somalia and Yemen traveling onward to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela. The specific Istanbul Airport requirement is confirmed in the Turkish Embassy’s notice for Indian and Nepalese passport holders. Check your passport and complete itinerary before departure.
Which countries appear in Turkey’s e-ATV guidance?
The Turkish Consulate General in Paris’s indexed transit guidance names the following ten nationalities in connection with electronic transit authorization for travel to the four destinations above:
- Afghanistan
- Burkina Faso
- Cameroon
- Chad
- Guinea
- India
- Mauritania
- Nepal
- Somalia
- Yemen
When searching for “Turkey e-ATV eligible countries,” remember that appearing on a nationality list is only part of the answer. It does not mean that every journey made by a citizen of that country requires an e-ATV, or that an application will automatically be approved.
Use the nationality and travel document you will actually present for the journey. Your country of residence or departure should not be substituted for your passport nationality. Travelers using diplomatic passports, official passports or non-standard travel documents should confirm their specific treatment rather than assume an ordinary-passport rule applies.
Which flight routes are covered?
The relevant onward countries are Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela. The Turkish Embassy’s e-ATV notice for Indian and Nepalese passport holders specifically concerns transit through Istanbul Airport and states that the requirement began on 15 April 2024.
Istanbul Airport uses the airport code IST. Do not treat every airport serving Istanbul as interchangeable, and do not automatically extend an IST-specific notice to another Turkish airport. If your itinerary has several connections, provide every flight segment when asking the airline or Turkish authorities to confirm the requirement.
The following examples illustrate how to read the nationality-and-route combination; they are not confirmation that particular flights operate:
- Indian passport, connection at IST, onward travel to Mexico: this matches the nationality, airport and destination described in the Embassy notice.
- Nepalese passport, connection at IST, onward travel to Colombia: this also matches that notice’s stated scope.
- Indian passport, connection at IST, onward travel to France: France is outside the four destinations in that specific notice. The notice alone does not establish an e-ATV obligation for this itinerary.
- A listed nationality with a connection at a different Turkish airport: obtain route-specific confirmation; the IST notice should not be used to decide the case automatically.
Does staying airside remove the requirement?
Remaining in the international transit area does not remove a nationality-and-route-specific e-ATV obligation. General advice about visa-free airside connections must be read together with the specific transit authorization rules.
For more on the distinction, read our explanation of Turkey transit requirements without leaving the airport. Ask your airline whether your actual connection can be completed airside, particularly if you have separate tickets or need to collect checked baggage.
An airport transit authorization should not be treated as permission to enter Turkey. If your plans involve passing through Turkish passport control, changing airports or sightseeing during the stopover, check the separate entry route for your nationality, passport and purpose.
What should you check before traveling?
Confirm the requirement against your actual booking, rather than relying on a country list alone:
- Identify the nationality and passport or travel document used for the trip.
- Check the airport code, onward country, travel date and all intermediate stops.
- Confirm whether baggage collection, boarding-pass arrangements or an airport transfer require you to enter Turkey.
- Review the applicable instructions through the official Turkish eVisa portal or the Turkish mission responsible for your circumstances.
- If an e-ATV is required, follow the applicable application instructions before travel. The Embassy notice instructs affected Indian and Nepalese passengers to carry a printout for airline and transit checks.
Meeting a Turkish transit requirement does not establish permission to enter your onward destination. Check the destination’s own entry requirements separately, and reconfirm your arrangements if the itinerary changes.
