Do I Need a Visa to Transit Through Istanbul Airport?

You generally do not need a Turkish visa when connecting between international flights at Istanbul Airport (IST) without leaving the international transit area. However, nationality- and route-specific airport transit visa requirements may apply. If you pass through passport control, you must meet Turkey’s entry requirements.

When can you stay airside without a visa?

For an international connection that remains entirely airside, the general rule is that a transit visa is not required. Before travelling, ask your airline whether your baggage will be checked through and whether you can obtain your onward boarding pass without entering Turkey.

Separate tickets can affect these arrangements. Do not assume that every self-transfer can be completed within the transit area.

Are there electronic airport transit visa exceptions?

Yes. A Turkish Embassy announcement dated 5 April 2024 introduced an Electronic Airport Transit Visa (e-ATV) requirement for Indian and Nepalese passport holders travelling through Istanbul Airport to Mexico, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela, effective from 15 April 2024.

This is a specific airport transit requirement, rather than permission to enter Turkey. Check the current instructions on the official Turkish eVisa portal and confirm the requirements for your passport and complete itinerary before departure.

What if you need to enter Turkey during your connection?

You must check the applicable entry rules if your connection requires you to:

• Pass through passport control to collect and recheck baggage.
• Take a domestic connecting flight.
• Travel to another airport, such as Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
• Visit Istanbul or stay at a hotel outside the international transit area.

Depending on your nationality, passport and circumstances, you may qualify for visa-free entry, an eVisa subject to its conditions, or need a visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate.
