Cave Monasteries

St. Barbara Church

St. Barbara Church is situated behind the rock housing Elmali (Apple) Church, featuring a cruciform layout supported by two columns. Barrel vaults adorn the north, south, and west arms of the cruciform, while the center, eastern arm, and corners boast domes. Red motifs are painted directly onto the rock. The walls and dome are striking with a diverse array of decorations, such as geometric patterns, mythological creatures, and military symbols. Dating back to the latter half of the 11th century, this church showcases a rich historical and artistic heritage.

St. Barbara Church

Apple (Elmali) Church

With its striking hues, Apple (Elmali) Church is one of the most notable structures in the area. It is a groin-vaulted structure with four columns and a central dome. The church features exquisite frescoes from the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Scenes from the Bible and the lives of Christ, Abraham's hospitality, and three Hebrew youths are shown in the paintings. Interestingly, the building is named after the apple orchard in front of the main entrance that fell down a long time ago.

Snake (Yilanli) Church

Snake (Yilanli) Church consists of two chambers: the rear chamber has a flat roof, while the front chamber is barrel-vaulted. Vibrant frescoes from the eleventh century were painted directly on the wall. Opposite the entryway lies a picture of Christ holding a book. On his left, there is a big cross, and Emperor Constantine and Helena are shown on both sides. Just next to it is the depiction of St. George and St. Theodore killing the snake. The Onophrios holding a sapling, the Apostle Thomas, and the building's founder, St. Basileios, holding a book in one hand and sanctifying with the other, are shown on the opposite wall.
